Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado takes his first victory in Formula 1 and William's first since Juan Pablo Montoya in Brazil back in 2004 after a strategic fight with local hero Fernando Alonso's Ferrari in Barcelona.

On Sunday Sebastian Vettel took the lead from the start of the Bahrain GP.

Vettel was followed and harried for much of the race by the tag team from Lotus of Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean who consistently pursued Vettel to the finish. At the chequered flag the Red Bull driver was mere three seconds in front of Raikkonen. Another lap or two and the result may have been very different!

Double world champion Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull returns to the top of the timesheet and pole position after setting a great time to beat Lewis Hamilton's McLaren into 2nd place by a tenth of a second. Mark Webber and Jenson Button start on the second row after Jenson Button made a mistake on his second run and chooses not to complete the lap.

Paul Di Resta has small off, into run off area and then goes on to use soft tyres, Force India are the only team to use soft tyres in P1, Bernie Ecclestone has a meeting with the Force India team.

McLaren practise pit stops following the challenge in China with Jenson Button's final stop, Timo Glock spins in turn 1.

Lewis Hamilton sets the fastest time after completing only 11 laps, Sebastian Vettel finishes with the second fastest time and Paul Di Resta third.

After gaining a great pole position on Saturday, with team mate Michael Schumacher behind. Rosberg storms ahead when the race kicks off with a great lead that would only be relinquished whilst in the pit lane for his two stops. With a difficult start at the beginning of the season, due to tyres subsequently losing them ground, there was no fragility during the race.   

Fernando Alonso congratulated his Ferrari team for his surprise victory at Kuala Lumper. “The team deserves this victory. It’s a tough time for us at the moment but this Sunday we will remember.”

The team’s strategy for the race was to score as many points as possible. Alonso felt the team realised their potential. “We did 25 points so it’s an unbelievable result. Good qualifying yesterday going into Q3 and then today keeping calm in some extreme conditions.”

Jenson Button opened the 2012 Formula 1 world championship with a commanding victory for McLaren in the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Button took the chequered flag, world champion Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) roared in second with Lewis Hamilton securing third place for McLaren.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button got their 2012 world championship campaign off to a flying start taking the top two positions on the grid for the Australian Grand Prix.

Just to make things even better for the Woking team, Romain Grosjean put his Lotus third ahead of Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes and the Red Bulls of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel.

Nobody got near to Hamilton’s 1m 24.922s, but Button’s 1m 25.074s put him ahead of Schumacher, who had improved to 1m 25.336s.

Caterham F1 Team has today announced that Vitaly Petrov has joined the team as race driver, replacing Jarno Trulli with immediate effect.

The Russian was at the Anglo-Malaysian team's factory in Hingham on Friday 17th February for a seat fitting ahead of his first run with the team at the second pre-season test in Barcelona, 21st to 24th February.
